Photography is changing me

Photography is teaching me a lot about life and why two or more people can view the same thing and all come away with different results.

It’s weird how a site like instagram makes this even clearer. Even with all the pre-loaded filters, one can easily tell those who seek the beauty around them and those who prefer the mundane. I don’t consider myself a great photographer and I hope this doesn’t come across as gloating but my point is I have taken pictures every single day of this year. If you had told me two years ago that I’d be this interested in photography, I’d have laughed it off.

Yet with the aid of my IPhone (Thank you Steve Jobs), I have been able to develop a greater appreciation for photography. Nowadays I always have my eyes on the lookout for something that might stand out in my immediate surroundings. The beauty of photography is that one can take the most mundane of pictures and turn it into something so vibrant.

It really amazes me just how much beauty can be found around me. I have come to realize that I am interested in those things most ignore. That tree on the corner that everyone passes by without taking a second look at, that old building with the Gothic sculptures that no one pays attention to or maybe a cool cloud formation on the horizon that goes unnoticed by most. These things appeal to me, and have impacted my life in ways I can’t properly describe.

I have had many moments where I have been awed by some of the pictures I have taken. We live in an amazingly beautiful world which unfortunately some fail to see. Some constantly see the bleakness of life, whilst others see the opposite. I tend to fall into that crowd that understands not everything is rosy, but there’s always reason to be hopeful. If someone can look at my pictures and take away something positive from it, then I have done my job.

I am noticing just how much photography is impacting my personal life. At first I was shy about taking pictures in public…in fact I used to look around to make sure no one was staring at me. I still do this, I am only just getting accustomed to the whole thing, but I have no doubt the more time I spend with it, the more my comfort level will increase.

In conclusion, go out there and start taking pictures or whatever it is that you are passionate about. Take an avid interest in your surroundings, you will be shocked at how much you can glean from the place you live in.
